Photographic postcard of hop pickers.

Photographic postcard of hop pickers. This is a real photograph, in rich sepia, of a family of hop pickers.
Presumably, it was taken in Kent. It came from the collection of a friend who lives in Kent and he thought it was a local photograph but there’s no clue to the photographer, publisher or place. Let alone the family, who look like a typical working class East End group except that there’s no father.
I have another postcard of hop pickers listed on my site: Hop pickers in Guestling. Real photograph postcard, c.1910 It came from the same collection.
This is a lovely photograph but I wish it had a location specified, at least.
I’ve dated it to around 1910 but perhaps there’s no father present because he’s fighting in the trenches of the First World War.
http://londonmuseum.org.uk has a lot of information about Londoners on hop picking ‘holidays’ in Kent. Most relevant museums seem to be in Kent. The tradition gradually died out and, apparently, finished by the end of the 1960s.
I nearly kept this card for my own collection but, at the moment, I’m exercising restraint. People often say to me:”What’s going to happen to all this stuff when you can no longer look after yourself or die?” I have no answer.
