Hop pickers in Guestling. Real Photograph postcard, c.1910. Tiny bumps to the corners but otherwise in perfect condition. Written-on but not posted. I assumed that Guestling is in Kent but it is in fact in East Sussex (3 miles from Hastings). I bought it with other hop picking paraphernalia which was from Kent. Pencil drawings of ‘Hop Pickers,’ 1910. is a drawing that I’ve listed on this site and it came with the postcard.
At the time – c. 1900-50, many London families from the East End went to the Kent (and East Sussex) hop fields as a paid holiday. The National Trust http://nationaltrust.org.uk has, at Scotney Castle in Kent, a story of someone who picked hops nearby in the 1950s.
Hop Pickers in Guestling is a lovely photograph. I was very pleased to buy it in a parcel of South Coast related ephemera from a friend who came to stay for a few days. We share a taste for old photographs and postcards with romantic associations. Again, I nearly kept this but I must sell things, especially as I get older and increasingly think to myself:”What are you keeping things for?” This may not be a good USP but it’s how I feel.
