Coronation Souvenir Handkerchief. 1902.

Coronation Souvenir Handkerchief. This is an Edward 7th. coronation souvenir handkerchief, 1902. 16×17 inches (approximately). It was printed  on cotton. From: “Lindsay Bros., Up to date Drapers, Bury St. Edmunds.” Apparently unused. It’s in very good condition but has some staining- it could probably do with a wash (it’s a bit off-colour) but I’m not going to touch it. It could be ironed. The photo. shows any problems.
I don’t know whether or not this is rare, but I’ve never seen another and I particularly like the added interest that it was sold by a draper in Bury St. Edmunds. I suppose these were ordered and then the name and address would have been added later and I imagine that there were shops all over the country selling similar handkerchiefs with their own names and addresses printed on. I’ve listed a 1953 coronation souvenir  here: Coronation Headscarf, 1953. but it’s a headscarf rather than a handkerchief.

I think that this would frame well. I’d suggest a close-fitting frame i.e. no mount and a very simple edge because there’s so much happening on the handkerchief print itself.
I have never dared to collect textiles. For half of my life, we’ve had a moth problem (especially when I lived in Cambridge). However, for the last few years it has not been a problem.
