Valentine cards. Mid-19th. century.
I think I’d like to keep these 3 together. They are very similar and I bought them together. They’ve never been mounted in an album and they are in excellent and original condition apart from “A Sweeping Advertisement” which has some damage to the ‘lace’ paper, which I’ve photographed.

Valentine cards. Mid-19th. century.
Valentine cards: each 7×4.75 inches. Mid-19th. century. I’d like to keep these together because I think they’ve always been together. At least, they’re very similar. It would be a shame to split them up. They are often meant to be funny and these actually made me laugh, which is a very good reason for me to buy them.

I have made a small collection of Valentine cards over the years and I shall list them gradually. I keep finding them in drawers and spending an hour or so looking at them. They’re a fascinating thing to collect: they’re romantic, inventive and speak volumes about the Georgian and Victorian people who sent them. I know that they were largely a middle class thing and often reek of privilege but that’s all part of the attraction. Fan card. Valentine, c.1880-90. is another I’ve listed here.
They seem to have been the same prices for the last 50 years! Anyway, they now seem relatively cheap. Perhaps, like a lot of antiques, it’s a good time to collect.
