Raphael Tuck calendar. 1899.

Raphael Tuck calendar. 1899. This is big: 12 inches high. The peacock’s tail fans out to show each month of the year. The chromo-litho. printing is particularly good. It’s printed on embossed card.
There are a few areas of damage:
The peacock no longer has a crest.
His beak looks very delicate but is still there.
There is a crease across his throat.
There is a repair across his feet.
January has been repaired at the base.
All the feathers have had the string replaced.
These repairs were not done by me and I bought it in its current state. It’s actually not bad. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother to list it. In fact, it was only on close examination that I found most of these minor damages.
I bought this for myself from the retired auctioneer. He knows exactly what I like. I suppose that’s from spending a career selling antiques -you end up knowing what people want. However, I have decided not to collect anything although this calendar has reminded me of why I liked ephemera in the first place. This is a fine example of printing, cutting and design. Raphael Tuck at their best.
Novelty calendar. 1878. In the form of a fan. Here is another calendar listed on this site. There are others.
If I didn’t have good sources built up over decades, I’d buy from http://eBay.co.uk
