A coronation souvenir headscarf, 1953. 33×29 inches. I don’t think it’s ever been worn and so the colours are bright. It’s starting to become a little frayed at one edge (see photo) but it doesn’t detract from the overall effect.

Coronation Headscarf, 1953.
Coronation Headscarf, 1953. This is a souvenir from Elizabeth the Second’s coronation. It measures 33×29 inches (approximately) and is printed in bright colours. It feels like silk but I imagine it’s made of Rayon, which is a kind of nylon.
I don’t think it’s ever been worn and so the colours are as bright as new. It’s starting to fray at one edge – see photo- but it doesn’t harm the image. Coronation Souvenir Handkerchief, 1902. This is another Coronation Souvenir which I bought with the Coronation Headscarf, 1953. I know it’s 50 years older but I think it was aimed at the same market.
There is a huge number of 1953 souvenirs on eBay http://eBay.co.uk
but I can’t find many headscarves. I’m not saying that this is a rare headscarf but I think it’s relatively unusual.
1953 is the year before I was born. I think it’s far away enough now to be worthy of attention. I don’t want to get too sniffy because in the 1970s I collected Festival of Britain things and that was in 1951 and so I was collecting things that were barely 20 years old. Also, Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden were names I admired in the 1970s and they were far from antique.
